Auditory processing is what our brains do with what our ears hear. Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a deficit in a person’s ability to internally process or comprehend sounds.
Characteristics:
- Difficulty hearing in noise
- Taking a long time to hear or respond
- Asking for frequent repetition
- Difficulty with following or understanding instructions
- Working very hard to hear or listen
- Difficulty with attention
- Easily Distracted
- Difficulty with reading or spelling
What can I expect an an APD Assessment?
Testing is mainly completed in the sound booth and involves repeating words and sentences presented to one or both ears.
The appointment takes approximately an hour and a half. Due to requiring focus and attention, these assessments are booked in the morning.
Recommendations for aural rehabilitation options will be discussed and tailored to the individual and/or family need.

How do I prepare for my appointment?
We ask the patient or parent to provide us with any applicable assessments and reports.
- Hearing evaluation
- Psychoeducational assessment
- Cognitive assessment
- VICA (Vancouver Island Children’s Assessment Network)
- Previous APD assessments
Prior to your appointment, we will email a questionnaire to fill out and send back for the audiologist to review and prepare for the assessment.
The day of the appointment, the patient should continue any medications per usual prior to testing. It is important to not interrupt medication for testing purposes.
